Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) Project
In 1999, the KHRC recognised that local organising is the key to fulfilling the mission to protect and promote human rights in Kenya. Accordingly the second phase of the Commission focused on empowering local people to be agents of change in their communities. The rapid growth of this approach of rooting human rights in communities is a testament to the success of local organising.
However, the KHRC’s success with this approach has not been without challenges; it has raised expectations in other communities facing serious human rights challenges. While the magnitude of human rights problems in Kenya is beyond the capacity of one organization such as the KHRC, the Commission nevertheless, recognizes the importance of taking up the challenge of emerging issues and supporting the most marginalized groups.
